VCIs as an Alternative to CP Systems

Zerust Oil & Gas at SABIC Conference
in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

AL JUBAIL, SAUDI ARABIA - 23RD OF MAY 2019 - Specialized Oil & Gas Engineering Company
(SOGEC) and Zerust Oil & Gas recently held an educational conference at a venue in Al Jubail,
Saudi Arabia on the Zerust Oil & Gas suite of extensive Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor (VCI)
solutions for the corrosion leads/engineers of SABIC, a global leader in diversified chemicals
headquartered in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The presentation specifically focused on the adoption of using Zerust Oil & Gas’s VCIs to protect
the vulnerable and critical external floor plates from the known phenomenon of soil side
corrosion. The interactive audience conveyed their common corrosion trends and a discussion
of how to mitigate those corrosion problems utilizing the Zerust Oil & Gas suite of solutions was
explained.

“It was an honor and a personal privilege to be welcomed to present at such an event,” said Phil
Low, Europe/Middle East Business Development Manager, Zerust Oil & Gas. “To get a room full
of the caliber and expertise of SABIC’s corrosion team is a rarity in the industry. As we know,
daily operational and integrity issues occupy a large portion of an operator’s time, so such an
esteemed attendance was fantastic to witness.”

The global industry for tank storage has historically adopted Cathodic Protection (CP) API-651
for protective measures to address/mitigate soil side corrosion. However, some failures within
the CP system such as air gaps when the tank bottom is moving and flexing during filling and
emptying, loss of current, breakdown of CP components, etc., leave the operator with underlying
corrosion issues.

Zerust Oil & Gas has over 10 years of global experience utilizing VCI technology to address soil
side corrosion and sees a global shift in protective measures. API recently has included VCI in
their 2610 standard, with further NACE adoption due in the coming months.

A highlight of the event was Mr. Abdallah Hassaneen, Project Engineer for Sogec, who sits on
the NACE committee and is CP L3 certified, Mr. Hassaneen presented a paper on recent testing
and comparison showcasing the compatibility of VCI and CP systems and how VCI can be a
standalone protective measure or work in conjunction with CP systems to enhance corrosion
protection.

The paper and testing were carried out by the Pipeline Research Council International (PRCI)
and Sujay Math, Ph.D., the Senior Technical Services Engineer at Zerust Oil & Gas. For more

“My role and drive are to extend on the great work my colleagues have completed across the
pond and ensure Europe/ME/GCC is aware there are alternatives and industry shifts to VCIs
over CP systems” said Mr. Low. “Zerust Oil & Gas has been around for over 40 years in the
automotive/industrial sectors and it is using that rich knowledge/history and experience to
develop innovative techniques to protect critical, and often very expensive, oil and gas assets.

Over the last year or so, I have seen great changes in operators’ mindsets with some of the
largest tank operators across Europe and the Middle East using Zerust Oil & Gas. The
importance for the operator is to keep their asset in a state of readiness, without huge
CAPEX/OPEX costs. With Zerust Oil & Gas VCIs, we can offer such alternatives and ultimately
reduce CAPEX and OPEX and extend the service life of the assets, in many cases the solutions
Zerust offer are non-intrusive making implementation non-burdensome allowing the operator
and client to continue without operational implications.

In the coming months ahead, we have ongoing multiple tank protection projects throughout
Europe and the Middle East from the Caspian/Adriatic/Canaries to Central Europe and
throughout the ME. Momentum is for sure building, and I very much look forward to the future
and bringing VCIs to the forefront of corrosion protective measures,” explained Mr. Low.
“Again, a special thanks to Sogec and SABIC for a special event,” said Mr. Low.
