Impressed Current Cathodic Protection (ICCP) systems are commonly used for tank bottom protection, pipeline protection, and other buried structures that rely on electricity to operate.
With ICCP systems reliant on an external electrical source, what happens when the electrical system powering them is compromised by severe weather conditions, outages, wire breaks, etc.? The answer is the ICCP systems become inactive leaving the asset unprotected and vulnerable to corrosion.
Operational Byproducts from ICCP Anodes Increase Corrosion Rates While System is Off
Additionally, there are some operational byproducts from ICCP anodes in the form of gases, which will increase corrosion rates quickly while the system is off. The corrosion rates during a shutdown of an ICCP system will be high due to anode byproducts and naturally occurring contaminants. Metal loss during these times is cumulative and any metal loss from the inactivity of an ICCP system will not return. Even if the external electrical source is in excellent condition, the ICCP system needs to be adjusted by a trained cathodic protection specialist to meet the appropriate cathodic protection criteria.
